The first session of the Fifty Ninth Congress concluded with no significant actions by either chamber. Lawmakers adjourned after routine procedures and minor legislative measures, leaving major issues unresolved.
The 59th Congress convened with Senate adjournment out of respect for the late Senator Platt of Connecticut. Miss Alice Roosevelt attended the first House session as Cannon was elected Speaker. Buck Brown colored, freed on bond for gambling in Justice D Kinsey court, began a fight at Star saloon on Main Street and attacked James Hall. He was jailed awaiting hearing. Morgan Brown and Horace Jenkins colored were also arrested by constabulary on a charge of being in a craps game.
No news from the east today. Mr Cashman is out of the city and will not be home until tomorrow. No word has been received from Mr Andrews by those who would hear.
In Girard Kansas a Spokane woman identified as Anna Berry refuses to surrender from a railroad coach where she has isolated herself since last Saturday. Sheriff Walsh ages to starve out the suspect while a crowd of locals watches. A boy named Kelsea Kelis was killed near Fort Scott earlier today while en route to the incident.
The legislative insurance committee resumed testimony this morning and Chairman Armstrong said a report would be ready for the first day of the coming legislature meeting. He added that Cornelius Buss and George Corte gou would not be called to testify under current plans.
The federal Supreme Court ruled that the United States may tax South Carolina for its liquor selling monopoly just as it would tax a private business. The decision clarifies taxation authority over state operations in the liquor trade.
Chicago December 4 Vermont Governor Bell here for a banquet says the Mary Rogers case is nearing its end and he will not interfere with the execution under any circumstances.

The Y M C A committee outlined plans for a local association and building.

W P Nichols manager of the Queen City Poultry and Egg company learned of his father W P Nichols death in Versailles Missouri. The elder Nichols 61 had been in failing health eight months and died at five this morning from stomach cancer. Survived by a wife and seven children including Albert E Orris William A Charles T Mrs F D Holt Sarah and W Nichols. The Kansas City resident will attend the funeral in Versailles.
Judge Hoffman issues a mandamus directing Longwood township directors William Riley Moreland sues Joseph Cartwright Newton Elmore and George Spears to establish a school and hire a teacher for colored children. Defendants cited to appear by December 1 to show cause for neglect of duties.
Mr. Alva Lee could not attend the Elks memorial service in Sedalia due to a wreck on the MKT near Parsons. His pledge to give a eulogy was thwarted when a special train, requested at 150 dollars, could not be arranged in time. He arrived in Sedalia early this morning, expressing regret at missing the engagement.
The firm C. A. Snow and Company Washington dispatches a pocket diary and memorandum for 1906 07 to Sentinel subscribers at two cents postpaid. The diary includes memoranda cash accounts census lists for states and cities calendars distances to old world cities and business laws and court decisions for inventors and patentees.
Returned home last night Miss Ingra Englund was in Alton Illinois visiting her sister Mrs Claude Reed.
James K. Kidd learned of Mrs. Alice M. Dyer death at her St. Louis home on Sunday at 11 am due to complications. Funeral plans set for Wednesday. Kidd to travel to St. Louis. brother in law Tom Dyer, from a Sedalia-area farm, also left for St. Louis. Kidd has long been associated with the Dyers in business.
The Missouri state suit against Standard Oil opened in New York before commissioner Frederick H. Sanborn. Witnesses include John D Rockefeller Henry M Flager John D Archbold Henry H Rogers Wade Hampton and other directors with service so far only on Rogers. The hearing occurs at 74 Broadway with testimonies and records to shape the case.
Sedalia editor J West Goodwin recalls Kansas City’s rough beginnings after a Kansas City Times interview. He discusses 1866 views, the 1869 Hannibal bridge banquet, and his belief Sedalia would outpace the metalcoast metropolis, despite early doubts and political shifts. He plans a Mexico month’s travel this week.
Senator Perkins of California said he declined to appoint Franklin Lane of San Francisco to the interstate commerce commission to replace ex Governor Fir of Illinois. The announcement came after President Roosevelt met Perkins in Washington on December 4.
