The fifth day of the fair opened under threat of inclement conditions with organizers urging caution as forecasts showed severe weather possible. Attendees stayed optimistic while officials monitored reports and prepared contingency plans.
A conservative estimate places attendance between 34 000 and 35 000 as fairgoers braved clouds and a threat of rain. Roseman Parker was arrested last night on a charge of robbery. Prosecutors allege he grabbed a State Fair visitor and took 35 dollars. He appeared before Magistrate Truxell this morning, his preliminary examination set for August 30, with bond set at 300 dollars.
A man in the city, after drinking heavily, stole a glass jar of chewing gum from Clemens Honkamp’s cigar store. He walked to the county jail and asked to be locked up. Deputy Sheriff J. C. Conner booked him, and the man appeared in court sober the next morning.
Miss Maude E Merri from Hamilton Missouri and Claude U Weasel manager of a Watrous department store were wed at 7 30 this morning in the courthouse with Judge O E Parsons performing a special ceremony. The groom, Pettis county born and a former Menschkes sales clerk, and the bride, a former Sedalia resident, plan a visit with relatives in this city and Lamonte before moving to Watrous to begin their married life.
Charles Williams, a Black man, was badly beaten last night by white men in front of the Elks hotel. He was shoved into a white woman who fell in the street, and officers arrested Williams before a mob could kill him. Justice N H Rogers continued his case until Saturday.
To Mr. and Mrs. George H. Scruton a baby boy was born on Thursday August 24.
A woman jumped from the Eads Bridge leaving her 7 year old daughter seated in a chair car. Authorities say the incident is a suicide and the child was unharmed.
In St Louis on August 25 Laura Oxford 32 wife of Fort Worth man George Oxford jumped from the Bals bridge after arriving by Burlington train. She left a note denying guilt and asking him to care for their baby. Her traveling companion Viola Spencer said Mrs Oxford was in nervous prostration after the trip.
Sophia Suter through attorney James T. Montgomery filed for divorce in circuit court alleging abuse threats and neglect. She cites repeated absences from the city and no communication when away, plus his opening a Fulton business and refusing to allow her to leave Sedalia or visit the child who is critically ill.
Cape May NJ Aug 25 Hundreds of automobilists from across the country gather on the beech for the Cape May Automobile Day races. Officials include S M Betler and A Batchelder with Walter Christie among top American entrants and M Louis Chevrolet heading foreign racers aboard a 120 horsepower F I A T racer.
The Old Colony club founded by Joseph Jefferson held its annual convention at South Dartmouth with a clambake at Laban’s Folly hotel. Jefferson’s death was mourned and the club will elect a new president at the next annual meeting.
