Topeka April 10 James R Garfield commissioner of corporations arrived to lead the investigation into the Standard Oil Co He conferred with Governor Hoch and said hearings will be secret to avoid alerting other possible violators He plans to stay two or three days then proceed to Texas Oklahoma Colorado and California He added they will use all available facts about the oil industry nationwide.
London reports a curious tale behind General Kuropatkin’s dismissal. A memorandum by Demchinski accused him of fault in Manchuria, predicting Russia’s failures unless Linevitch led a recovery. The czar confronted the charges after Mukden and ordered Kuropatkin’s removal.
Ossining N Y April 10 the final execution in the old Sing Sing death house occurred this morning. Martin Ebert a young Mount Vernon teamster was executed for the 1903 murder of his wife Augusta whom he choked with a shoe string and hid in a sewer after luring her to a secluded spot.
Hugo Logan, three and a half years old, the son of Henry Logan living south of the city, drowned Saturday afternoon while with his father who was fishing at Durrill creek. The funeral was held this morning.

A large Black man who gave the name George Thomas was arrested by Officers Boullt and Card this morning. He sold a pair of pants to a Main Street second hand dealer, which the officers believe were stolen. He was interrogated but gave no definite information.
Nashville Tennessee April 10 large representative attendance at opening of Tennessee division Travelers Protective Association convention. The opening service included a prayer by Rev J C Cowan and cordial greetings from Mayor A S Williams. State president J C Sterchi of Knoxville delivered the annual address as business sessions proceed. Reports show steady growth and satisfactory order. Visitors to be entertained at Glendale Park this evening.
Richmond Virginia April 10 The grand lodge district No 4 of the Bnai Brith began its annual meeting in Richmond and will stay in session through tomorrow. Prominent members attend from North Carolina Virginia Maryland South Carolina Georgia and the District of Columbia.
George Wilder of Denver 84 disappeared after sailing from Galveston on the steamer Concha. He wrote letters announcing his plan to drown himself at sea and transferred real estate to his step daughters before departure. Despite wireless and shipboard search efforts, he was found dead in the Gulf after leaving his coat on the railing.
