Puget Sound Methodist Conference Adopts Stark Anarchy Address

The Puget Sound Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church met in Olympia and adjourned after a memorial service for McKinley. Bishop Mallalieu delivered the memorial address and denounced anarchism, urging Christians to eradicate the creed and, if needed, treat its followers mercilessly. The conference planned a memorial procession and subsequent mass meeting with Bishop Mallalieu.

Memorial Day Observances and Office Closures Reported

The waterfront was quiet with dock offices and crews closed for Memorial Day. Navy pay, customs, and other government offices in Washington halted operations. Port Orchard boats also suspended. Bremerton naval yards and battleships were shut, with security measures described around Commandant Furnet and Casey.

Wrecking of White Star dock halted amid debris removal

The White Star dock wrecking was paused as about 500 dollars of piles were salvaged by the pile-driver. Large timbers were loaded onto scows for pier rebuilding. Debris covering hay remains to be cleared. wreckers will resume tomorrow with a goal to clear the way for lifting sunken cement within a week.

Boers Captured Three Mounted Infantry Companies Near Utrecht

Lord Kitchener reports from Pretoria that Gen Botha and his forces captured three mounted infantry companies near Utrecht in the Transvaal after a fierce fight. British losses include three officers killed and 20 men killed with 20 wounded. Smuts led a rush on the Gordon Highlanders at Klanda riverpoort, while 12 officers and 4 men were taken captive. Johnson the bartender was arrested on suspicion, and Gordon was taken into custody for begging.

Cobra torpedo destroyer Cobra founder in North Sea

Disaster reports state the torpedo boat destroyer Cobra foundered in the North Sea with about 50 crew aboard and only 12 rescued. Separately, Home Camp No. 286 Woodmen of the World adopted sorrowful resolutions on President McKinley’s death. Art League Bohemians elected Mr. and Mrs. Geo Mayer as members.

Crowded Armory Attends McKinley Memorial Service

The Armory filled with mourners as doors opened at a set time for a national funeral observance. Decorations of black and white, banners, a white cross, and McKinley portraits framed the solemn event led by Judge Orange Jacobs and Mayor Humes with Wagner's band playing as the service began.
