Capt Pavey of the Fabre liner Sant Anna suspects Austro German spies started the mid ocean fire. Lloyds agent in the Azores said bombs were placed on the ship which carried 1700 Italian reservists to Naples. The blaze produced several explosions but no panic. thirty unexploded bombs were later found after a nine hour battle.
