Sears, Roebuck workers allege a scheme by General Manager George H. Sanborn to accelerate billing with a strict pay scale. Billing room staff claim starting wages are eight to ten dollars weekly, rising after a year, and that a daily discharge notice was posted to shame workers. A dismissal occurred Tuesday morning citing an unnamed reason.
Paris report says fighting raged northeast of Paris in a cold drizzle as rain set in early. Germans, short of food, were reportedly cooking oats with scant beef to stretch their rations, while French troops kept kitchens at the front and served hot coffee.
