Harding Addresses Pacific Coast Race Question

Senator Warren G. Harding speaks to a California delegation on Sept. 14, warning that racial questions on the Pacific coast create a fault line for national unity. He says America must stand behind coast states, balancing duties to foreign powers and to American groups, while acknowledging racial differences and the need for national honor.

City council disapproves poolrooms and toys jitney vote planned

Council disapproved five applications for operating Japanese poolrooms and employment agencies. A public safety committee review was ordered for the revised city wiring code. The body opened talks on higher interest rates for local improvement bonds and scheduled a public land sale. Three municipal parcels were offered, two for cemetery use, and one adjacent to the county farm. An ordinance laid out Third Ave N W from 42nd to 74th Street and a $50,000 utility improvement was referred to the board of public works. The Nickerson area road project and $10,000 for sanitarium repairs were approved, with sweeping changes to parking and traffic code under study. A plan to address racial tensions and wartime citizenship was echoed in a lengthy council debate. The jitney issue prompted a special election proposal for November 2 after proposals were debated and motions passed.
