Terrible forest fires rage across Oregon and Washington

Wildfires sweep south and west of Portland destroying hamlets and timber camps. Fire rages near Gresham Coburg and Kalama with mills burned, bridges down, and thousands of acres of timber lost. Dozens reported missing or dead as fires threaten Vancouver and Olympia, with communications down and riverside towns in peril.

Strikes Turn Violent At Wilkes Barre Colliery

Fifteen union laborers en route to Parsons were attacked by a mob of about 75 men, mostly foreigners, as violence flared and a worker, Wrenk Stanielmeiner, was seriously wounded. The mob stoned a car, cut telephone lines, and drove passengers away while police and deputies guard the scene.

Coal Operators Open to Settlement After Night Conference

In Harrisburg Pennsylvania a late night session involving Governor Stone, State Senator Flynn, Pittsburg Republican boss W K McMullin, Mine Workers President Mitchell, and District Presidents Fahey Nichols and Duffy discussed ending the anthracite strike. Mitchell and Duffy departed for Wilkesbarre after the talks, and the governor appeared to push for terms acceptable to operators though details remained secret. A written note stated all differences had been passed with the best of feeling.
