The United States army launches a morning offensive southwest of St Mihiel aiming to crush the salient and push the line back toward Metz. Generals Pershing and Hindenburg face a wary stalemate as troops, rivers, and rugged terrain shape the advance and reserves grow tight.
Washington reports a massive enlistment push as 13 million men aged 18 to 45 register for the draft. Pershing timed the move with a nationwide surge in war mobilization. In Meuse near St. Mihiel and Metz the American line presses forward on the Toul front. The Meuse and Moselle region lies before Metz with the Lorraine border close by as the salient narrows.
