Tokyo reports Liao Yang captured by Japanese troops after Kuropatkin ordered villages burned to deny stores to the Japanese. Russian retreat left cannons and arms on the battlefield as Manchurians flee toward brigands Chunchuses. Mukden records show about 10,000 Russian casualties.
City officials push a plan for 1500000 jail and 650000 city hall bonds to fund a jail on Fifth and Yesler and to buy the east half of the Keezer block for a new city hall. Critics warn Great Northern Railway may set high terms and slam the project as poorly sited and fiscally risky.
Reports from Mukden and London describe train service disrupted and roads impassable as Japanese forces seize the railway between Liaoyang and Mukden. Coverage cites Kuropatkin’s perilous position and Oyama’s pursuit amid continued Far East hostilities and Russian retreat across the Taltse river under Japanese fire.

Meinberg is 28, 6 11 inches, 195 pounds. both have prison records and forearm tattoos.
London dispatch cites Field Marshal Oyama stating Japanese forces began a retreat on September 1 toward Liaoyang after a failed resistance to a major attack. He notes fierce pursuit by left and central divisions, tactical river crossing, and Czech? casualties totaling 10 000 killed and wounded since August 29. The report mentions capture of 10 artillery pieces and attacks near Hetying Tul.
The Port Arthur report says Japanese attacks were repulsed with heavy losses and firing has dropped since yesterday. A Japanese column moves south from Liao Tishan to blockade. eleven Japanese warships lie outside the harbor. General Nodo telegraphs progress toward Shinchi Yan to Liso Yang for a junction with the left.
Sept 2 report states Japanese forces secured about 1 700 rifles at Liao Yang that Russians discarded in retreat, reflecting ongoing artillery and supply pressures in the northern theater.
A telegram from General Kuropatkin reports continuous firing through yesterday. Russian forces are said to be withdrawing, with retreats reported across the front.
A St Petersburg dispatch reports an admirals council with Admiral Grand Duke Alexie presiding decided to court martial Rear Admiral Prince Ouktomsky for disobeying orders not to return with the Port Arthur fleet. The court will meet at Vladivostok following the August 10 sortie.
The Modern Woodmen will depart for Monte Cristo at 8 45 Monday morning. A special train of 12 coaches and two engines will convey the group.
The American fishing schooner Samo set Duxbury was seized this morning by the Canadian government cruiser Gladiator for being within the three mile limit.
In Chicago on September 2 Alexander McBean of San Francisco filed a claim to the McVicker estate. Attorneys for McBean notified estate counsel Condee but grounds are unclear. The will may not be probated before next week as McVicker's body is expected to arrive Sunday. Earlier a Green Lake car collision at Interlake station injured several passengers, with C R Hawkins sustaining a broken rib and back sprains.
Chan Clark was hanged in the state penitentiary here for the murder of Lelia Page, his mistress, in Olympia. The crime occurred in the Jewel House of ill fame on the morning of January.
Olympia Wash Sept 2 Mrs Clark mother of the murderer lies in a serious condition from grief. At 4 this morning she asked attendants the hour and repeated it until physicians gave opiates to prevent collapse. Though she senses the execution has passed she is not told all and is kept under care.
A morning fire on the hill west of Larkepur spread rapidly and now threatens the countryside including Mount Tamalpias Mill Valley Baltimore Canyon and the Kent and Murray properties. Fire fighters are working to stop the flames from reaching Larkspur.
James O'Donnell arrested yesterday on a writ of no exent to stop him leaving the state faced habeas corpus in court. His wife sues for divorce claiming he planned to flee to avoid support. O'Donnell denies the charges saying he was away on business. The damnus morpus case argues the writ was improperly issued in this state.
A Russian steamer was blown up near Port Arthur while removing mines in the outer harbor. Japanese observers watched from seaward as the vessel struck a mine at 2 26 p m one mile below Chengtungshan. The number of lives lost remains unknown.
Fire at the Issaquah coal mine spreads through air course and steam pipe shaft and threatens the main shaft. Manager Allen and a large crew attempt suppression while residents evacuate. 100 union firefighters offer aid, rejected. Foreman William Lewis fainted from fumes but revived.
A bottle with a March 6 1904 note from Lamorna's doomed crew was found near Jefferson Head after the ship left Tacoma February 27 bound for Queenstown with wheat. First Officer James Sloane reports sinking conditions and no hope for the crew while Captain Carmack commanded the Lamorna, long known at Port Townsend.
Local sportsmen report the grouse pheasants and ducks season opened with good promise despite cloudy morning conditions. Hunters returned with several fine specimens though opinions vary on overall bird abundance, while a large number of sportsmen headed to hunting grounds.
