In Stockton California 16 year old Mar old Crowthers died after ten days unconsciousness from tubercular meningitis attributed to hazing by fellow apprentices on October 8 at a hardware store. Autopsy confirms cause and inquest planned with chasers to testify this evening. Meantime port Townsend begins inspections of steamers and sailing vessels for bubonic plague.
Won Loy a Chinaman faced a grave dilemma when he appeared before Judge Frater with a license to wed Christine Cunningham. Frater refused the ceremony, but minister Nev Galeh Wood later conducted the wedding after learning the groom had lived in the country since age three.
Four robbers planned a midnight heist at the Midway Bar on Sixth Ave between King and Wallerate. Officers trapped two men, Harry Bachman and Joseph Bence, aged 18 and 23, as the others fled. the pair were jailed while the other two escaped. The gang aimed to drop a safe via a floor panel and blast it with nitroglycerin. a security setup led to their capture after dawn.
Roy Adame, watching dogs near Hood's Canal, was shot and killed by A H Tantow after Adame refused to leave Tantow's land. Tantow trapped and captured by boat officers, claimed self defense amid local fears of further violence. Tantow held in jail then transferred to county custody.
George Biswanger faces trial in Judge Morris's court on forgery charges. He allegedly forged Howard Ferguson’s name to a deed with intent to defraud EB. T. Hebb and others. Biswanger was acquitted recently by a jury on a similar charge.
Health officials in Seattle assure residents no danger of contagion from early plague cases. Dr. White notes Yersin serum and Haffkine serum used as preventive and curative agents. Rat control efforts consider raising bounties as the city cleans the Oriental quarter and quarantines affected districts.

United Press reports Mateus, an affluent Seattle Japanese engineer, shot himself after a failed attempt to kill his sweetheart K Noma in Los Angeles. Detectives found Noma faint on the floor as Mateus died from a temple shot. The bullet grazed her and lodged in the wall.
United Press reports a Census Bureau study estimates about one million divorce cases in twenty years with two thirds of petitioners successful. The forthcoming report analyzes divorce trends and outcomes across the period.
Akron Ohio October 28 United Press reports Fred A Bar on cashier and treasurer of the Dollar Savings Hank died by his own hand Sunday. He was found to be $25000 short in the bank accounts. A full investigation of his books will follow his funeral. Authorities initially suspected murder.
Superintendent of Streets and Sewers M. T. Maloney launched a crusade to thoroughly clean alleys side streets and thoroughfares in the business district. Most of the street cleaning force was reassigned to this effort under a corps of special inspectors.
The Alaska Smelting company of New Jersey was adjudged bankrupt in Judge Hanford's court this morning. Petitioners named in the case include W. P. Fuller & Co. Lowman & Hanford Stationery company Frederick Baueman and Daniel Kel.
James Gillleple asks Justice of the Peace J E Carroll to place Peter Brannon under bonds to keep the peace. He states Brannon has threatened to kill him on several occasions and fears further harm if not restrained.
In St Louis Judge Pollard fined Mrs Julia Otting 26 dollars for nagging her husband. He offered to suspend the fine if she signed a pledge to refrain from scolding him for one year, marking a novel public reform in his courtroom. Neighbors said the couple argued. the husband did not testify.
The city affairs committee of the Chamber of Commerce will report tomorrow on changing how street improvements are assessed. Proposals aim to limit assessments to abutting property, but current charter constraints may make this impracticable.
The 16 crew members were found starving in southern waters by the steamer Baker on October 23 after 24 days adrift from Green Island Jamaica. They faced death from starvation and only barely survived during a five day ordeal at sea. The Baker arrived in New York from Port Antonio with the rescued sailors.

Luella S Dunn files for divorce alleging bigamy and threats by Edward R Dunn a wealthy Alaska mine owner and Seattle property holder. She claims a prior marriage to Ed Ranson and says Dunn pursued another woman while presenting both as his wives. She seeks alimony or money for seduction and ruination. The couple traveled to Seattle then aboard the President and are believed to have left town.
Mayor Moore refutes claims from the Hay Market Press that socialist representatives sought permission Saturday. He says he was not approached and denies proposing arrests. The socialist Labor Temple meeting last night planned a free speech campaign on Pike Place tonight at 8. about 27 volunteers are expected to join, with potential arrests for blockading streets. Mrs. H F Titus among speakers.
In Oregon a traveling salesman T M Moorehouse died in a runaway stage between Roseburg and Coos Bay with three passengers injured and four horses killed. In Illinois James Red dick died when his automobile overturned near Libertyville, the car occupants injured. In Montana Isaac A Morrison pioneer printer and Montana mining figure died at his ranch near Helena.
Henry Barnhart a 56 year old laborer dropped dead on the Northern Pacific car tracks near South Sixty second street Tacoma while on his way to work. Investigators have not yet completed inquiries but death is believed due to heart disease.
Captain William Sharp Cobb a well known mariner aged 71 died in his bed at his son John L. Cobb’s home 8 St Paul Avenue early yesterday morning after a day of light rain. The report notes Cobb’s long career and identifies his residence and son.
The Kaiser, Empress, and imperial family including Crown Prince Frederick Wilhelm and Prince Eitel attended Caruso’s first appearance in Rigoletto in Berlin. The audience cheered, the Empress clapped from the royal box, and after Aida the Kaiser awarded Caruso the Cross of the Crown of Prussia.
