Starving strikers from the Peo ie Coal Company colliery gathered at gates Oct 23 and were turned away as Crawford declined union favors. Families brought meager meals while awaiting word on a return to work amid arbitration.
A fragmented notice states that the Internal Association of Stationary Flana plans actions affecting Morton and the Inthendee region until all members are ordered to resume work on the same terms as miners. The move is said to threaten manufacturers and gas sectors if not adjusted.
The Courtney Ford, a 282 net ton vessel built in 1893 and sailing from Port Gamble with lumber for Nome, foundered near Unalaska on July 12 after a capsizing off Glen Island. Representing Wade, T Abbott outlined plans of capitalists to operate an integrated line with transfer rights and commuter tickets. further time was requested and the matter will be resumed soon.
Rafe Turner, the clever colored boy, arrived at Pleasant Beach to train for the October 9 Madison theater fight with Perry Queenan. Queenan trains in the city and runs to South Seattle daily. Kid Fredericks also plans a 20 round bout on the same night. Opponent Kearn is said to be a capable fighter.
Deputy Sheriff nabbed George Siegert after a purse snatching on Third Avenue near the theater. Mrs Wilson lost her bag as two boys fled. Siegert says a black boy forced him under threat. He has prior reform school time and may be sent back.
At yesterday afternoon’s chamber of commerce meeting the streets committee reported favorably on installing street signs at all graded street intersections. A steel enamel sign with white letters on blue was deemed most serviceable, and the committee supported countersinking street names into concrete walks at intersections.
Superintendent Cooper reports a sharp rise in Beattie public school attendance for the month ending October 10, marking the first month of the new school year. Enrollments reached 13,042, up from 11, unknown in 1901 and 9,701 in 1900, with the three year average noted.
