In a letter to the Sunday Club of Seattle the mayor rebutted accusations by Prosecuting Attorney Lundin that police cooperation was lacking and that raids and arrests were hampered by his orders. He asserts moral conditions are improving and cites police raid policies and a lawsuit against the chief of police as context.
In Brownsville on October 21 a force of Carranza loyalists attacked Ojo de Agua, killing three American soldiers and wounding six. The dead are Sergt. Schaeffer Troop G Third Cavalry Private McConnell Company D Signal Corps Private Joyce Company D Signal Corps. Wounded: Sergt. Smith Corp. Cansier Company DO Troopers Kubley Bohned Behr Langland Company G. The Mexicans, wearing Carranzista uniforms, surrounded the village and answered bugle calls in a coordinated assault.
Berlin reports Germany optimistic about quick Balkan advance through Serbia to Bulgaria and Turkey. A foreign office official says control of Anatolian cotton and wool will reduce reliance on America as a prelude to war against England. Reventlow and others stress Balkan success could determine outcome and threaten Suez and Egypt.
John Caspar, Kansas City distiller, jailed nine years and three days and fined $23,000 in Leavenworth for pleading guilty in the government moonshine conspiracy. A new ten thousand dollar hydro aeroplane owned by EB Boeing, built by Floyd Smith for the Los Angeles company, made a first trial flight Thursday morning from Lake Washington hangar near Madison Park. The machine rose to 1000 feet and flew over Elliott Bay then back to the hangar as onlookers watched. Further tests are expected later in the week.
