The Cunard liner Alaunia struck a mine in the English Channel, sank in midmorning, with no passengers aboard. Officials report Capt H M Denison and a majority of the crew were saved, some missing. The ship had left New York for Falmouth and London carrying 200 passengers and carried no war munitions.
An explosion at 1 PM in Mine No. 7 at Glast traps more than 100 miners in Fairmont West Virginia. Early reports indicate the death toll would run high though exact figures are not yet available.
Six masked bandits halted Santa Fe mail and express train No 405 near Bliss Oklahoma. They dynamited the express car safe, killed Express Messenger Percy A Norman, and fled with an unknown amount of money, while some trainmen put loot at 10000 dollars though officials deny any money was taken. A posse searches the country north of Bliss as officials warn of a likely later confrontation.
A promotional note announces The Star’s new weekly novel titled The Idyll of Twin Fires by Hard Cider Howard. Readers are invited to purchase a six cent weekly issue starting Monday, with the book priced at $1.50 and a daily one cent per day schedule.
The Seattle Bar Association will convene a Friday meeting in court room No 1 to protest the candidacy of J Mile A Root for the superior court. Root defends his record and rebukes efforts to force withdrawal, citing primary support and threats to press coverage of the case.
In fall 1908, rumors about Justice Milo A Root prompted Chief Justice Hadley to seek a State Bar inquiry. A committee of five attorneys found three facts: Root drafted the Harr is v Great Northern opinion but sent it to Gordon who rewrote it and Root later filed Gordon's version as his own. The railroad’s chief counsel approved the altered opinion.
President Wilson arrives at New York Central Station at 1 05 PM to massive crowds. He travels to the Blackstone hotel and then to the Press club for a luncheon. In South Bend 8000 greet the train while school children wave mags. In Syracuse 15000 give a spectacular ovation.
A German submarine likely U-53 is reported sunk off Nantucket. The North Pacific, halted at Norfolk for bunker coal, received the claim from a British cruiser via a London telegraph stating the submarine was sunk east of Nantucket. Lloyds insurance rate drop fueled speculation of the U-53’s fate.

A West Seattle ferry smashed into the tug Hero in dense fog at about 7 40 this Thursday morning carrying 200 passengers. Both vessels slowed immediately averting a more serious crash. The tug sustained a broken prow and rails but no injuries were reported.
The Episcopal church conference faces a renewed fight as the House of Bishops secret session contemplates reviving a ban on remarriage for anyone who has been party to a divorce. Portland police hunt for a lone bandit who held up three men near the business district, relieving them of $15 in an incident described as the first highway robbery in weeks. Chas Jamar, Lloyd Matthews, and Lloyd Larsen were the victims.
