The Beattie and its crew faced a fatal incident when James Heth and McBeth died from fumes during a sulphur fumigation at Umatilla. Battalion Chief Cook and Captain Sullivan were overcome, with McBeth’s body found near a sulphur pot after a fall in the ship’s hold. McBeth, 20, had arrived a week earlier from Seattle.
