Survivors recount a violent engagement at sea after a submarine attacked the Hirano Maru, a 7,956 ton twin screw passenger ship. An American destroyer responded and rescued 29 people from icy waters as the U boat fled after depth bombs and torpedo fire. Five Japanese women, two nurses and five children were among the drowned passengers.
An English port reports the sinking of the Japanese Hirano Maru by a submarine. About 300 passengers and crew are missing after the attack occurred Friday morning, about 300 miles south of Ireland en route to Japan. The strike was sudden and without warning.

Mre Vrances Coyner formerly Mies Frances Gardner widowed Friday after her husband C. M. Coyner a railroad brakeman was killed in a train crash at Holgate and Whatcom Street Thursday afternoon. The couple married Wednesday evening and spent the night at the New Washington hotel. Coyner was found dead on the tracks two hours later after leaving his wife at the hotel. Mrs Coyner awaits at a friend’s home as police investigate the death details.
