Taft’s Seattle Visit Drives Yells and Flags
Several hundred University of Washington students greeted President Taft with a college yell led by Yell Leader William Horsley. Taft toured Seattle and Anacortes where Mayor Soule gave a 40-pound frozen king salmon for the party. The presidential flag flew over the city for the second time, atop the Washington hotel, with a blue field, 18 stars, a gold eagle, a dagger and olive branch. The Taft party stayed in the Washington’s state suite, used a private car on a six car Pullman train, and employed a special telephone. The Kennedy steamer ferried Taft to the navy yard and Tacoma where the Tacoma hotel reserved a state suite for him. Engineer William Roope, who drove Taft’s train from Bellingham, also piloted Arthur’s train decades ago.

Puget Sound Steamer Perdita Destroyed By Fire
