A German naval submarine, U-56, arrived in New York Harbor this afternoon. Officials confirm the sub is not a freighter and identify it through the United States naval training station in Newport, Rhode Island.
Washington reports say the United States role in European peace appears limited as World War I nears its end. The Leyland line steamer Mercian reported being shelled by a German submarine near the English coast. Captain C. J. Walker showed a visor split by shell splinter as warships appeared and saved the vessel with no fatalities or material damage.
