The tug Vrion under Captain Gilmore battles a fierce storm off Magnolia Bluff near Smiths Cove since midnight. Crew of three remains aboard as engineers reach shore in a perilous voyage and local tugs fail to answer calls. The incident punctuates a wider fracas in Columbia City over an Independent Telephone franchise and a mayoral signature.
Jake Terry claims he knows bandits as the search for the Great Northern gang continues with fruitless results. It now appears they may be hiding in Seattle. The Great Northern Express company raises rewards to five thousand dollars for each member and six hundred dollars for each conviction.
The steamer Ohio, 11 days out from Nome, reached port at 2 p m Friday nearly four days overdue due to storms. On board were 499 passengers who learned their friends had worried for their safety. A smallpox case appeared at Fort Davis among Ohio passengers. A crew member Alfred Jan een was seized. several crew narrowly escaped exposure. The ship delayed by machinery damage and collided with the Perdita during docking, injuring the other vessel. Philadelphia Jack O Birten rode as a passenger.
Rainy season tightens grip as city faces 87 street contracts delayed by contractors and council votes. Worn streets, torn up for grading and paving, hinder travel and municipal progress through the winter.

New York Oct 6 The Insurance investigation reveals 2.6 million dollars in commissions paid by Mutual Life to two relatives of Richard A. McCurdy, president of the company. District Attorney Jerome says the scandals will be referred to an extraordinary grand jury. McCurdy testified as Robert R. McCurdy described officer salaries and company profits and roles of agents and managers in the sprawling inquiry.
The Star reports that William Parmelee, attorney for prostitutes and pickpockets, struck a reporter in police court with a cane. The attack stemmed from exposure of Parmelee's ties to Ruth Ray, a notorious local figure. Bystanders separated them. the piece denounces legal defenders of disreputable clients and mocks Parmelee’s conduct.
Salt Lake City Utah reports the 76th general conference of the Mormon church opening for a four day session this morning with about five thousand in attendance.
President Joseph F. Smith and councilors urged strict adherence to law and tithing. Joseph Smith, leader of the reorganized church, listened intently. An anticipated demonstration by anti Smith supporters did not occur but is expected on voting day to support officers.
Pat Crowe waives requisition formalities and will depart with detectives for Omaha tomorrow. He recounts how he spent Cuda hy's $25,000, mostly on saloons, portraying himself as a good fellow during the getaway from Omaha.
In San Francisco on October 6 United Daughters of the Confederacy members chose Mrs George Henderson as president by unanimous vote.
A warrant seeks the arrest of Swiftwater Bill on charges of dashing his sick wife Beatrice Gates and two children. Mrs Gates filed for divorce June 24 alleging failure to support and neglect. The claim notes Bill took gold dust aboard the steamer Ohio from Nome.
