In a tense match the Shamrock edges Columbia after shifting wind conditions. Capt. Barr on Sycamore pressed early, but Shamrock reversed the lead as wind faded and then revived, the race declared off with resail set for next Thursday.
A fire and subsequent explosion at Extension mines No 2 and No 3 near Nanaimo in Victoria British Columbia killed seventeen miners after a rescue attempt. The blaze started at the bottom of the level and spread rapidly trapping the rescue party, with numerous victims named in the official report.
Washington October 1 Admiral Bob Evans testified as cross examination resumed in the Behley court of inquiry. He recalled a May conference on the Brooklyn and discussed fleet actions and gun range damage to Iowa and other vessels. Evans noted limited conversations and that officers would rely on signals if the enemy appeared unexpectedly.
Christina Moran, widow of Tate Peter Moran, files for probate contest claiming Robert Moran kept and misused her late husband’s will. Two Smith Cove residents report a Sunday afternoon scene at Johnson's wharf where seven youths aged 13 to 17 and two girls drank beer at Purkeypile's blind pig. The party moved between the brush and the venue, sang obscene songs, and a girl lay in the brush. Residents vow to bring the case to Judge George and push for enforcement to end the establishment. They allege Purkeypile brothers sold liquor openly for two years without a license and say the city council refused their license request.
