Under the gold-starred service flag, Marshal Foch was honored at the University of Washington as President Suzzallo conferred the honorary doctor of laws. The student body rose as the Alma Mater and Meany Hall rang with dedicated ceremony.
Marshal Foch of France spoke to a vast Seattle audience at the University of Washington, praising allied unity and the world’s peace. He saluted Seattle women awarded medals for France, while thousands cheered as The Marseillaise and The Star Spangled Banner played and flowered aisles lined his path.
The Star chronicles Marshal Ferdinand Foch's five hour Seattle visit with a thunder of cheers from a thousand at the depot. Mayor Caldwell, M. Vacher-Corbiere, and crowds greet the French hero as he tours Lincoln playfield, the University of Washington, and the Coliseum.
Redding American Legion post leads California’s first welcome for Marshal Foch of France. Foch has agreed to stop his special train for 15 minutes Friday evening, marking a notable civic event in Redding.
Hanford MacNider commander of the American Legion stepped away from the parade and the crowd to visit wounded veterans. He left Marshal Foch’s party to shake hands with bedridden servicemen at Providence Hospital and spread cheer before rejoining the marshal at the Coliseum.
In Red Bluff California a bus carrying about 14 Red Bluff high school students was struck by a southbound Southern Pacific train near Proberta crossing. Twelve youths died and the rest were hospitalized with grim prospects for recovery as bodies lay along the tracks for 200 yards.
A memorial poem by Leo H. Lassen honors France and Lafayette. It recalls the wartime sacrifices of soldiers and the trust placed by Columbia and the United States in France's leadership. The piece invokes memory, valor, and gratitude for Allied collaboration.
