Will Ask More Patrol Vessels For Puget Sound Immigration

The Department of Commerce and Labor seeks an appropriation this December session to fund at least four patrol vessels for Puget Sound and nearby waters. The ships would join the Immigration service to curb smuggling of unwelcome aliens from Canada. Current local resources include only a few launches and one gasoline rig schooner, deemed insufficient to counter the smugglers.

Smuggling Fleet Discussed to Harass Coast Waters

Commissioner General Sargent urged a fleet of fast vessels to aid immigration officers in patrolling the coast to curb smuggling. He outlined small 80 to 90 foot weasels and a larger flagship, with speeds of 15 to 20 knots, to track and encircle smugglers among island hideouts. Local officials supported the plan, arguing current patrols cannot cover vast waters.
