A Vladivostok telegram reports the town burning with most of the port consumed and mobs in control. Refugees crowd ships as looting and famine threats rise. first day riots yield hundreds killed or wounded, mainly sailors and artillerymen. Jewish rabbis burned reported in Beersarabia turmoil.
Seattle fire department faces serious charges as Captain W. J. Carr and Fireman George E. Cunningham are accused by Fire Chief Cook of intoxication on duty neglect of duties and conduct unbecoming a public servant. They were suspended awaiting Civil Service Commission findings after Chief Cook witnessed the incident fueled by a Monarch Bar near Main Street.
A London dispatch says the czar intends issuing an ukase soon to allot a large share of imperial lands to peasants, covering about a third of Russia once owned by grand dukes and the emperor. New York reports Jewish Defense Association calls for aid to Russian Jews with funds for arms and supplies. War news from Warsaw notes events at Pultusk.
In St. Petersburg, unrest worsens as strikes spread and electric lights fail. Count Witte consults officials on declaring martial law while crowds gather at railway stations seeking exit amid fears of greater disorders. Rosjestvenaky offers to command the navy but awaits reply. Eleven killed and twenty wounded in looting incidents as peasants organize to curb thieves during disturbances.
Robert Fitzsimmons says sentiment moved him to sign to fight Philadelphia Jack for the heavyweight title in San Francisco next month. The bout will be held between the 20th and month’s end with 60 percent of gross receipts to the winner’s side, 75 and 25 percent split, a side bet of 35004, and each principal posting 2600 forfeit money. Fitzsimmons plans training in San Jose and will confer with O Brien and Eddie Graney on the terms.
In Judge Yakey's court on Thursday morning L F Foss, described as portly with a shiny dome, testified that he never abused his wife but admitted attempting to kiss her, saying he did so because he loved her and hoped for a physical relationship.
A stormy start to the Alaska delegates convention in the Motel Butler banquet room with nearly 200 in attendance. Preliminary Chairman A J Ross opened proceedings as proxy eligibility sparked a vote over temporary leadership and recognition of proxy representatives. Samuel Archer of Nome won the temporary chair, while Fritz was named temporary secretary after ex-Governor Swineford balked at the chairmanship pending proxy issues.
At a convention temporary chairman Mr. Archer urged Alaskans to focus on national improvement rather than district gain. After Archer’s election T J Ryan of Nome moved to adjourn for late arriving delegates. Ex Governor Swineford would accept a permanent chairmanship only if proxy representation is settled and delegates show support.
In Marysville on November 15 reports say the Oroville branch of the Southern Pacific was sold to the Western Pacific. The Pacific Coast Construction company surveying team camp was abandoned as crews were discharged after laying over a mile of roadbed.
Arctic explorer Dr. Antoine Varicle, leader of a planned north pole expedition, has returned to Seattle and says preparations cannot be finished until spring. He travels with Charles MacDonald to Dawson on the Dolphin, with a Seattle return hoped for in March to resume the ice crossing.
In St Louis on November 15 C W Post of Washington DC addressed the Citizens Industrial Association convention outlining unions as the nether mill stone and industrial combinations as the upper mill stone. About 200 delegates attended with Judge Holden of Chicago speaking later. An information charged William Raynor with larceny from the person for robbing W F Bartly of 40 dollars on November 12.
