Seattle celebrates the first Washington volunteers with a grand homecoming parade. Crowds fill streets, banners glow, and salutes ring out for Marines and the First Washington contingent as Gov. Rogers and local bands participate.
Early morning crowds fill the waterfront as ships gather for a royal welcome. Generals and guests aboard the Grant and other revenue cutters join a grand parade escorting the Queen into sight. Bells, whistles, and cheers erupt as the homecoming flotilla passes Seattie and the Fighting First inspires the city with a triumphant return.
At Ocean Dock early today, Companies B and C of the National Guard lined the dock awaiting transport. Capt. Crane led Company B with Heely and Lieut. Case in command. The Queen and fleet passed, salutes exploded, and thousands cheered as soldiers, mothers, and sweethearts greeted the returning volunteers, then marched to Washington dock in orderly procession.
From Arlington dock the Washington Volunteer regiment led a grand parade up University Street with militia and three open carriages. Crowds filled the two main avenues as returning heroes drew long cheers, the moment underscoring the true meaning of war and marking the greatest such affair Seattle had seen.
