Mayor Moore refuses to sign warrants for May salaries causing a potential payroll hold. Council blocks street superintendent and Cass salaries, while about 15,000 city workers may go unpaid on payday. Walter seeks mandamus to force warrants. treasury head Russell holds funds.
A legislative commission appointed to appraise Babe Coien and Lake Washing lands resumed morning sessions at the Artington hotel. Experts valued lands from 1600 to 83000 per acre, far above shore owners prior estimates. witnesses from real estate and business sectors testified. The commission plans to stay in Seattle for the rest of the week to hear further testimony.
A blaze swept the McMillan Co building at 102-764 Commeares St in Tacoma last night at 8:46. One fireman was injured and the stock and fittings were damaged by smoke and water to about 26,000 dollars. The fire started in burning electrical material and caused extensive damage to the premises.
Frank Clancy sat in the council lobby last night and watched the body sustain the mayor’s veto of his saloon license. There was no objection as members understood the action. Clancy must wait while the saloon license is limited.
In San Francisco the trial heard Heney alleging tampering by police and detectives Dinan Hamill and Graham to influence jurors and witnesses for Schmitz. A special elisor may be sought as venires are summoned. a new 50 jurors panel is ordered after the previous pool exhausted. Indictments for bribery in the gas rate case against Schmitz, Rees, Dwyane DeBabia, Drum and Martin were postponed to Friday.
H. HB. Dans, injured in an elevator accident at the First Avenue apartments, died yesterday morning at the Pacific. Funeral arrangements are not yet set. Dans worked with Seattle International and was lured here by ill health of his eldest child who joined the family from Portland a week ago. He leaves a wife and four children.
The month of May is expected to surpass 1,000 arrests with 950 booked by yesterday and an average of 37 per day. April saw 909 bookings, a record high.
Six deputy sheriffs and guards led by McKinnon set up a tent in front of the jail to enforce a strict isolation. No new smallpox cases were found today as inmates with the disease were moved to the pest house and the east tank fumigated. Superior Court judges will meet to decide procedures for newly arrested persons during the quarantine.
In Beatice, fakers LaFayette Berry and Walton petitioned Judge Albertson for an injunction to stop Chief Wappenstein from interfering with their bloodless surgery show. The suit names Mayor Moore and the city, argues profits of over $1,000 nightly, and cites expenses of about $3,260 for a week.
John Tweed, a private detective and electrician, is lodged in the city jail and charged with stealing electricity from the Seattle Electric Company. He allegedly cut out his meter and enjoyed light from the utility, with arrest following an inspector's discovery of the ruse.

In San Francisco on May 33 several Japanese nationals were arrested for the assault on Horace Mase and Randolph Merriweather early yesterday morning. Mase was severely stabbed in the attack.
