In Peteraburg on May 14 an 11 year old youth named Bhutilman stabbed Bhataleff, warden of the city prison, four times and mortally wounded him in revenge for the warden’s treatment of political prisoners. The assailant fatally wounded a bystander who tried to intervene and was arrested afterward.
TOKIO reports a fire at Kubert colliery on Hokkaido Island destroying 418 buildings and causing the deaths of nine miners. In Lincoln Nebraska, frigid conditions persist with 14 hours of low temperatures and snow reported in the northwest region.
A Louisville and Nashville passenger train coach derailed near Louisville, Kentucky, after a broken flange caused the wreck. Several people are reported dead and many injured as coaches mangled and left the track, with bodies in the morgue and injured taken to hospitals.

The municipal civil service commission plans to decide whether Babe Little, a fireman with a criminal past, deceived the commission when applying for the exam. An inquiry by Chief Wappenstein found a jail sentence for a minor offense and an arrest for a gravier offense, challenging the oath that he had never been convicted.
Mayor Moore after talks with the license and revenue committee will introduce a ordinance to redefine the saloon district boundaries. The proposal would include all city saloons except at Smiths Cove with potential extension to include two saloons at Third Avenue and Union. The famous Prope twins Mahlon and Martin of Clarkeburn WV claimed to be the oldest in the United States. Georgetown girl five miles from home wandered off in the morning and was found by Patrolman Oshorne near Beattie And Seneca Avenue. Mrs Storm was overwhelmed with grief then relieved when the child was returned to the police station. Officers could not determine how the child traveled the distance.
The Cartwright crew is cleared of theft accusations tied to Arlington dock loot after Major Wood and Captain Cranle concluded no crew involvement. The investigation found the tug did not carry away any loot and that items were removed earlier from the transport Sherman under Clerk Rupp’s oversight.
Mike Sheridan a Northern Pacific track walker killed himself by carbolic acid on his 76th birthday, believing Osler's life-span theory. Deputy coroner Wiltsie said the act was premeditated. two sons are believed to live in Virginia and burial is planned in Baunlaw.
Patrolman Bunnell arrested W. M. Lark on Pioneer Square for begging to buy a meal. Judge Gordon sentenced him to thirty days in the police court stating there is no need for an able bodied man to beg. He warned beggars to avoid the Beattie police and especially the judge in the future.

The people of Kirkland will observe Memorial Day at home with graveside rites in the cemetery and brief exercises at 8 30 a m. The Methodist church program follows at 10 30 a m with Hon. W H White of Redmond and Rev J A Mitchell delivering remarks. Public school pupils will sing and lunch will be served. Churches hold joint memorial at the Baptist church with Rev D R Tomlin of the Congregational church delivering the sermon.
John Glover reports to police that a gang of boys around Howjell Street have trampled and broken fruit trees at his orchard on Minor Avenue. The incident concerns vandalism and property damage in a residential area.
Charles Arneson of North Bend is jailed on murder charges in connection with the August killings of P. H. Ross and his wife at Keriston. Sheriff Smith had watched the suspect since the crime, with bloodied clothing and Ross belongings found in Arneson’s possession.
