United Press reports a major blaze in Bellingham last night destroyed a full city block of business structures. Property losses are estimated. one man, a worker named woe hosermman, was seriously injured after being crushed by falling debris.
A large fire started in a bakery on W Holly Street and spread across the block bounded by D and C streets Holly and Astor amid piles supporting structures. Firefighters saved little as three companies battled flames with eight hoses. many lodging house residents fled in night attire. most of Japanese town in the block was destroyed and homeless. Property losses include Brie Bine & Smith Kraseke Confectionery New England Proutys Candy Anchor Bar Buffalo second hand Chapmans barber shop and others.

Walter A. Hall, longtime clerk in the city comptroller's office and former Seattle park board clerk, has been asked to resign to chief William J. Bothwell on June 1. Bothwell cites no work and failure to follow orders as reasons. Hall regards removal as political punishment and may appeal to civil service.

The Dewey, the largest American navy floating dry dock, sank in 70 feet of water at Manila after water valves were left open. Metalled at Olongapo in 1906, the dock cost $1,000,000 and served vessels of the Dreadnaught class before going out of commission in the Orient.
The senate approved a naval bill for the year ending June 30, 1911 totaling 134 million dollars. Planned work includes two first class battleships at about 12.5 million each with armor and guns, two first class colliers up to 1 million each, five submarine torpedo boats totaling 2.1 million, and six torpedo boat destroyers up to 650 thousand dollars each. A provision limits the number of battleships from a single firm. The two new battleships will be Dreadnoughts, the largest warships in the world.
At the University of Washington on May 24 crowds gathered at the campus observatory to glimpse Halley's comet clarified by a total lunar eclipse. Prof Gould noted the moon's total eclipse lasted from 7 30 to 11 45 with full display of the comet head about 19 000 000 miles from Earth and a tail of 16 000 000 miles.
Five people are dead and about twenty injured in a Bogalusa Louisiana race riot following a negro picnic. A quarrel between a white man and a negro sparked the disturbance as town officials telegraphed for aid from surrounding communities to restore order.
In the English Channel the Clyde steamer Kerrymore sank after a collision with the German four-masted ship J. Fr. Vinnen, with 22 drowned and only one survivor who died. A second tragedy off Lake Huron saw the Frank H. Goodyear sink after a collision with the James B. Wood, 18 of 23 crew drowned, many from Argona, Michigan, as fog hampered rescue. The Wood damaged but survived, and William Seamina aided rescues nearby.

In San Francisco the United States circuit court of appeals affirmed the sentence of A Erickeon from Seattle who was convicted of conspiring to raise milk prices.

Nearly 2,000 lobsters arrive from the Atlantic to Yaquina Bay near Watertown to be planted by the government with 2,000,000 lobster bags. FE Boothby, superintendent, oversees the hatchery at Boothby Bay Maine. The program aims to establish lobsters on the Pacific coast and follows successful Eastern oyster plantings in Yaquina Bay.
Seattle defeats Vancouver 2 to 0 in a morning contest highlighted by sharp fielding and solid pitching. Thompson pitched for Seattle allowing two hits. Lyvch made a running catch to save a score, and Miller kept the Beavers’ hits scattered as three double plays energized the Turkish defense. Afternoon game scheduled for 2:30. Washington May 24. A hitherto unpublished report shows Theodore Roosevelt fully supported the insurgents in 1909 as the House Progressives planned a campaign with Roosevelt and Insurgency as their rallying cry. Roosevelt urged Taft to back insurgent rules and Cannon opposition but hesitated to formally endorse in writing. He offered a letter of endorsement for internal circulation only, while stressing potential embarrassment to a successor.
