The first of nine arrests in a federal grand jury case was that of J M Hammond president of Mutual Funding Co on postal fraud charges. The company allegedly swindled hundreds, mainly women, with a 150 percent return scheme and $80 investments. Hammond’s bail was set at $2000. other officers named include Z J F Hickman W Hackmuth C L Barnett and W C Berg. The scheme used mailings to solicit payments and promised certificates paying $129 after seventy five weeks though never backed by actual earnings. The firm operated from the Moler building with $140000 capitalization and is now in receivership.
D A McDonald arrives from Nome stating the labor strike ends with miners securing their demands without union recognition by operators. Local officials note the settlement follows protests by Nome miners and workers.
James Forney, a vagrant charged with vagrancy, testified that detectives who arrested him had previously dismissed him. Frank Fetter of the National Refining Company testified before the Interstate Commerce Commission on the oil hearing. He said Standard Oil moved oil from Whiting Indiana refiners to Duluth and other lake ports by pipelines and steamships at low summer rates to force independents to use rail and keep rail rates high.
