The United States notes that Russian and Ukrainian negotiators are close to opening discussions in Kiev. Reports from Petrograd indicate famine is spreading, with hunger severe in several regions of Russia and in parts of the plain country.

German Professors Dropped From University of Washington

Three German teachers Dr Frederick W Meisnest Dr Conrad A Tresaman and Instructor Hans H Hoff were removed from the University of Washington German department faculty after a 65 percent drop in demand. President Henry Suzzallo said only those with unquestioned sympathies remain and noted Meisnest had previously been removed as head amid pupil charges of indiscreet remarks before US entry into the war.

Washington May 21 President Wilson sent to the senate the nomination of Maj Gen Peyton C. March U S A to be a general. Other nominations included Tas ker H Bliss to be general by brevet a former major general and chief of staff.

Murder Suspect Sought After Triple Slaying In Tent

A family of three, a woman about 35 and her two children aged 13 and 11, were found shot dead in a Pacific coast tent. Police traced a Dodge driver seen with an elderly machine and a Studebaker owner informed, while a Ford may have fled toward Oregon or Washington. No identification recovered.

French Do Brilliant Dash Captures 500 Germans

Allied forces in Flanders report a brilliant dash near the Belgian border last night retaking Locre Hospice Brulogze and surrounding woods and farms. French troops advanced east of Hill 44 and took 500 unwounded Germans with light casualties to their own, according to the dispatch.
