May 19 in Nanaimo British Columbia an explosion at the Hamilton Powder Company separator plant killed five workers. The dead include George Preston married Elias Wager married HH Meredith married W D Aldwin single and foreman Herbert Hugh married. The plant and surrounding works were wrecked and the force of the blast was felt for miles. One body recovered was badly mutilated.
In WAVANA May 19 a pair of 4000 pound dynamite blasts leveled barracks in Pinar Del Rio. Estimates say 95 to 110 killed and 100 plus injured, many rural guards and their families perished. Casualties include workers in the public works department and guards loading shipments. The disaster occurred during civil unrest between whites and blacks, with rumors of a comet scaring witnesses.
Deputy Sheriff Liner identified W. Coon of 1100 Jefferson Street as a suspect in forged checks for the Washing Rubber & Distributing Co. Coon appeared before the insanity commission amid continued grand jury indictments. he had been sought by police with no prior trace until today when his parents were notified.

United Press reports from Williams Bay Wisconsin that Halley's comet may have lost part or all of its tail. Director Frost of Yerkes Observatory says Earth did not pass through the tail last night and the tail remains visible in the eastern sky. He outlines three possibilities including the tail breaking, cessation of tail formation, or incorrect calculations about the comet's path.
Observers at the Tokio astronomical observatory photographed Halley’s comet as it crossed the sun. No Earth effects were recorded. Weather during the event was fine.
University of Washington astronomer Prof James E Gould states in Seattle that Halley’s comet could not cause sun spots during a sun spot minimum. He cites internal solar eruption forces as the likely cause and notes clouded skies hid any possible transit observations.
