A United Press dispatch from Washington reports Hindenburg seeks to mobilize most of the German High Seas Fleet from Kiel to support a land operation. Officials say a German victory hinges on breaking Britain’s intact defense, with France and possibly Japan joining to cripple the Entente.

Massive Aetna plant blast in Oakdale harms 170 dead 400 injured

A huge explosion at the Aetna Chemical Co. plant in Oakdale near Pittsburgh today killed about 170 workers and left over 400 injured. The blast leveled the main building and sparked a fast spreading fire. Officials launched an inquiry but expect limited findings.

Plan for nationwide boycott over German wartime cruelty

Seattle mothers launch a nation wide movement to boycott Made in Germany articles for 30 years if any American prisoner is maltreated by the enemy. Mrs BE A Strout started the drive. Judge Burke aids. Pledges will be distributed next week and dropped beyond German lines. The pledge vows to boycott German made goods until the war ends and beyond. One day’s pay for mercy Chicago also begins a Red Cross fund drive of 6 million dollars with 60 000 participants.

Infantry Does Little During Lull Of Battle In France

Haig reported limited infantry action during a lull with mutual artillery duels near Givenchy and Rebecq that night. Hostile guns remained active in Lens Hazebrouck and Ypres sectors as American forces noted reconnaissance and intermittent artillery. French war office added violent actions north and south of the Avre with German raids failing near Massiges and Four de Paris.

Pageant Calls For Red Cross Drive Support

A wartime pageant toured Seattle to urge donations for the Red Cross war fund drive. Ten units marched along First and Second avenues as crowds packed sidewalks. Skinner & Eddy workers pledge 25 000 to the Red Cross, with the Employes relief fund adding a daily contribution.

On May 18 twenty sticks of dynamite were found on Howard street near the Red Cross parade route in San Francisco. Police conducted a search as part of the inquiry, prompted by the proximity to the procession and the timing around the parade event.

Registration of New Draft Set for June 5

Young men of Seattle and King county who have become 21 since June 5, 1917 or will be 21 by midnight June 4, 1918 must register for select draft service in Seattle on June 5. Orders to proceed with war service registration were received at district board headquarters late Friday. Local boards are to prepare and notices were posted. Exceptions cover those in military service. Precincts, addresses, and phone numbers of boards are listed for Seattle residents.
