John C. Hindle, 23, a barber, frail after months of liquor, faces murder charges for an 11 month old boy’s death with defense claiming delirium tremens. Key testimony from Hindle’s mother in law and a longshoreman describes a drunken scene and a baby’s fatal gasps.
Dr Henry Suzzallo a 40 year old Columbia philosophy professor is elected president of the University of Washington by the board of regents at the Hotel Washington. He was born in San Jose California educated at Stanford and the California normal school and joined Columbia in 1909. He is noted for a brisk manner and strong reputation in education.
Western governors opened a Seattle conference at the Washington hotel with six governors and ex governor James L Hawley present. Conservation topics were dropped as militant military prep took the floor led by Governor Withycombe who urged more militia and national guard training. Colorado's Carlson backed the plan and proposed extending training from high school to post graduate guard courses. Nevada’s Boyle criticized the militia for policing disputes and urged preparedness. Washington’s Lister warned there would be no war.

On May 18 the liner Transylvania with nearly 900 aboard including many Americans, narrowly escaped a German submarine on its voyage to Glasgow. Passengers reported the torpedo passed about 40 yards astern as the ship zigzagged to evade the raider, with Captain Black steering rapid turns and careening at times. Kenneth Douglas, an actor, corroborated Walter Bursten of Kent's account of the incident.
Amsterdam May 18 Germany will formally reply to the American protest by refusing to alter its submarine warfare methods. Berlin sources say the note will deny disavowing the Lusitania sinking and place blame on England for unsafe seas and on America for allowing passengers on armed ships. The German argument cites torpedo as the cause and an ammunition explosion aboard the liner.
Otto Politi, a watchman aboard the steamer City of Puebla, was seized by three men on First Avenue and robbed in a Sherman hotel room. He reported losing $22, a gold watch and chain, and a Moose charm. The landlady found him locked in the room at 2 a.m. and freed him. Also, Warren bids for army transport boilers opened.
