William D. Haywood said he will return to the United States to serve a 20 year Leavenworth sentence after the Third Internationale meetings in Moscow. He claimed bondsmen would not suffer if bonds were canceled and described Russia as a model for workers with no unemployment, women’s equality, and extensive rest homes. In Chicago, bonds of eight IWW leaders who failed to surrender were forfeited by the circuit court of appeals.
In Chicago Peggy Hopkins Joyce, facing a divorce suit from her third millionaire husband, is barricaded in a Park Avenue apartment guarded by bodyguards. She refuses talk, directs questions to her lawyer William Klein, and dismisses reports linking her to Arthur Hammerstein or a possible marriage.
In Kalama Washington the father Harvey Riker 65 and son Fred Riker 39 died after a savage near canyon gun battle over Myrtle Riker the younger wife. The duel lasted about a half hour with rapid gunfire and a rifle draw before both men fell fatally wounded. The young wife fled through the mountains to summon officials.
The Supreme Court on May 16 upheld the federal inheritance tax law enacted on September 8, 1916. The ruling sustained the government's method of computing the tax and refused deductions for payments made by executors to various states from the taxable amount.
Dr. John Sorenson faces manslaughter trial for the death of Mrs. Marie Reimers on February 17. The proceeding opened before Judge Mitchell Gilliam with nurse Daisy Fromuth charged alongside the physician.
Charles R. Pierce, 11, son of Rube C. Pierce, ran away to join the A. G. Barnes circus. He accompanied the show to Olympia and was arrested in Tacoma on Sunday and sent home. Reports of kidnapping and ransom were later dismissed as exaggeration.
New York police seek a Broadway gambling man after wealthy lingerie maker John H. Reid was shot five times at Mrs. Hazel Warner’s residence near New York University. Reid lay dying at Fordham Hospital as officers questioned Warner, Miss Lila Wiley, and Francis T. Boylan, all alleged witnesses who vanished.
T. J. Holbridge a wealthy Kansas City tourist died from injuries after being thrown from his car when it struck an obstacle on a road near Los Angeles. The auto skidded, turned around and ran over him.
William T. Beeks, chief deputy collector of internal revenue, says no repeal action will be taken this season as the cost of keeping cool remains high and rumors of a wartime ice cream tax reversal are unfounded.
Washington May 16 The war department announced four men have been removed from the draft deserter list. These are the only names so far officially found to have been wrongfully included in the published lists with department aid.
The state auditor with limited staff and one signature writer cannot process more than 270 soldiers’ bonus warrants daily, while the welfare commission loan list accelerates. As a result 45,000 veterans face delays and thousands remain jobless and hungry.
Nine jobless service men found work Monday and four new names joined the veterans seeking jobs in Seattle. Adjutant Hervey Lindley of Rainier Noble Post said the group filled painting, cleaning, janitorial, coal handling, and garden tasks. The Rainier Noble Post headquarters at Fourth Ave and University St drew over fifty veterans awaiting calls. Four new unemployed veterans listed their trades and addresses.
Seattle ranked 11th among U S cities in May postal receipts with 1.688 million dollars deposited in postal savings deposits. The May report attributed the figures to assistant postmaster Chas Perkins and noted total nationwide deposits of 158.1 million dollars.
Donald A. McDonald federal prohibition director addressed the Kingland M. E. church congregation Sunday night on current enforcement status. Prohibition Inspector Sylvester A. Moore led the services.
The census bureau reports the retail food dollar in May 1921 is worth 64 cents, an 18 cent increase from May 1920 when it hit a record low of 46 cents. The wholesale dollar is 24 cents higher than that May.
The Washington state effort to distribute bonuses to 60,000 veterans stalls, with only about one quarter paid after delays. State Auditor Clausen and Archie Tweedy defend slow progress, citing a three-signature requirement and a single welfare list as bottlenecks while acknowledging 28 to 30 extra staff could help. Word from The Star notes many veterans remain waiting as armistice-era bonuses lag into a full year.
About 1,500 of the 6,500 seats were filled. When expenses have been paid it is probable the hospital will benefit by the remaining proceeds.
Thomas J. Stone, a former brakeman, claims white workers were discharged and Japanese workers employed in their places across Northern Pacific yards. He says 25 laid off at Centria, 40 at Kalama, 100 Japs in Seattle yards, and Castle Rock workers were replaced after a special train. Officials denied the claim saying Japanese workers cannot replace white yard men or trainmen.
The barge Mister broke free from the steamer Byron off White Fish Point during a blizzard and is now given up. Its crew included one woman and six men. A second barge towed by the Zillah was recovered on Sunday as six inches of snow fell in the storm.
