May 14 report says Japanese land and sea assault on Dainy presses, five cruisers a battleship and a gunboat entering the harbor and bombarding the town. An estimated 20,000 Japanese troops press landward while Russians rally, with anticipated surrender this afternoon.
An unconfirmed report from Paris claims Port Arthur fell after a prolonged battle with heavy casualties, with figures around 10 000 killed. La France edition and a St Petersburg telegram repeat the rumor noting fierce fighting and government officials’ consternation.
Lela Layman, a remarkably pretty 16 year old girl from Benedict, is missing from the Monod Hospital where her brother lies ill. She wore a diamond ring and had an uncut diamond worth 65 dollars. Her mother in Bellingham reports concern and suspects she may have been persuaded to leave with a friend who also vanished.
William Steffen surrendered to police after a warrant was sworn for his arrest for selling minor in the Madison Park pavilion without a license. He faces trial May 18 before Justice Gordon. Steffen has prior similar offenses and previously won a superior court case.
M Bilis arrested yesterday by Officer Carr charged with on the sidewalk released by Justice George after proving he expectorated on a cross walk rather than the main walk. The board of health asks Mayor Ballinger to enforce the sidewalk expectoration ordinance and to implement it hereafter.

IRKUTSK May 14 Admiral Skrydloff passed through the city today aboard a dispatch train on his way to the Far East. The brief stop was noted by local officials and residents who gathered to watch the convoy.

MALGA May 24. Undertakers went on strike today as taxes cut earnings to nearly nothing. Mrs Lucy Campbell died suddenly in her room at 210 Third Avenue of heart disease. Her husband J M Campbell found the body on returning at 11:30 pm. Roomer Mrs Holmes heard moaning but misattributed it to Mr Campbell. Deputy Coroner Arnold attended.
A palace page in the czar’s residence has been placed under military restraint after playing pranks on the emperor. He lined toy tap soldiers on the writing desk and hid to see the czar’s reaction, and filled the bed with buttons from the imperial uniform. The page’s mind is described as unbalanced.

Five men were seriously injured in a gasoline explosion in the basement of the Monterey apartments in Chicago. Captain Conway of the fire department was among the injured and believed fatally after the blast this morning. Tenants panicked and fled as the building suffered little structural damage.
