London reports Russians destroyed Port Arthur fleet and plan evacuation as Vice Admiral Togo notes multiple explosions near the harbor. Japanese press says Russians scuttled ships before withdrawal while heavy losses and General Zascaliteh’s death are noted.
A morning St Petersburg dispatch says another large battle occurred between Russian and Japanese forces. The Japanese corps under General Kuroki engaged the enemy in ongoing hostilities and the report notes heavy fighting.
The Telegraph's Rome correspondent reports Chee Poo dispatch saying Russians consider Liao Yang untenable as Japanese push from Feng Wang Chena and New Chwang. Russians plan to fall back on Mukden where a first serious resistance is expected.
Whatcom resident A. E. Mead will be named as the gubernatorial candidate at a Tacoma event today. The announcement is expected to elevate Mead's bid in the state race, with supporters gathering to mark the occasion.

Monterey California May 10. Regimental Sergeant Major B E A McKensie of the Fifteenth United States Infantry stationed at Camp Ord was fatally shot about midnight. Officers hunt a suspect said to be a member of Company A Ninth Colored Cavalry who vowed to kill McKensie. The assailant fired from a dark alley.
The quarterly report of County Treasurer McConnaughey for the period ending March 31, 194 shows a $20 increase over the same period last year. Property tax collections drive the rise, comprising the bulk of the gain.
Chief Delaney pledged to crack down on pool halls and kept his word arresting George Bhurdy and Julius Sehneider at the Standard pool room on Occidental avenue and Washington street. Detectives Wappenstein and Kennedy booked them at headquarters on the charge of selling pools.
