A cyclone ravaged Marquette Kansas killing about 28 residents and injuring over 100 as one family perished. Homes and Lincoln county structures were destroyed leaving the town of 600 in chaos. Communication failed. a morgue was set up at Olaf Oleson’s store.

One officer was injured and three men and two officers escaped from his vessel. Japanese effort to raise the ships is judged unlikely except possibly the Bayan in the inner harbor.
Mae C Wood sues Consul Wynne and Consul Miller with Secretary Loeb for damages alleging they procured from her love letters by Senator Thomas C Platt of New York. Wood plans to sue the senator for his promise as the case resurfaces from an old affair.
In Texas on May 9 a pistol duel in Arkansas Faisabo ends with the killing of Baward Calhoun by ex W. T. Fidridge of the Cane Belt railroad. The feud stems from the prior killing of William Donovan, a railroad official, by Eldridge during his presidency, with ongoing ambushes and disarray following.
A Denver bound train carrying the president departed at 7 with a pilot team ten minutes ahead. the public offered no applause as the president slept. In Trenton the court granted an appeal in the Valenties case delaying Supreme Court action and sparing a life pending decision. Golden Link lodge plans a banquet May 15 at the Hotel Washington to mark its tenth anniversary, listing attendees from Ballard and Seattle.
In Judge Gillham court Barney Schmidt a witness in Jennie Matson vs Seattle Electric testified for the defense and contradicted prior statements prompting Attorney Alexander to declare the case over. Henry Teutse, 14, was committed to the industrial school by Judge Frater for truancy. John Johnson’s name was changed to John Jensen Wall by law. H S Ewing was granted a divorce from Clara Esther Ewing for cruelty. Cornelius C Henness was granted a divorce from Augusta Henness for abandonment. J F Lane elected treasurer of the Central Market Co to succeed C H Taylor who departs soon for Europe.
In Manchester May reports say Sir Mortimer Durand, Britain’s ambassador in Washington, carries Roosevelt’s autograph letter to the king about stopping hostilities in the Far East. The king may reply via Joseph Choate. Naval reports claim Japan has a patrol fleet of four to five battleships and twenty fast cruisers to guard communications with Manchuria if Toyo is defeated.
Peaceful conditions linger as employers prepare to deploy 1,800 nonunion teams. Drivers quit at several firms delivering to boycott targets, raising flour shortages with Wenig Teaming delivering 15,000 barrels weekly. Dold and Shea plan to meet the president’s special to seek mediation in the dispute.
Dr G C Martin of the United States Geological Survey arrives with topographer R E Hamilton and assistant geologist A G Maddern in the city Monday night. Hamilton says they sail on the steamship Portland for Comptroller Bay to begin a thorough study this summer.

In Olympia a crippled barber, likely A. T. Rush, entered a local saloon and shot himself in the head with a 45 caliber revolver. A letter from his mother in St Edwards Nebraska urged him to return home and promised to send a ticket. He is believed to have lived in Tacoma.
