Reports say the Cunard liner Lusitania was torpedoed and sunk off the Irish coast with a large American passenger list. News describes lifeboats and fishing boats aiding passengers, with no confirmed loss of life and searches by tugs and aid from Queenstown and Kinsale.
Tokyo reports China will accept Japan’s fifth demand withdrawal and all other concessions. Peace moves progress as cabinet approval follows through with details to finalize negotiations. The plan includes Chinese use of Japanese advisers in political financial and military affairs and a fixed arms procurement ratio.
Washington officials discussed a New York embassy advertisement that warned Americans not to travel on British ships. While officials doubted embassy fore knowledge, they noted the warning followed by the Lusitania disaster stirred official comment.
Washington May 7 President Wilson had just finished lunch when Assistant Secretary Bryan rushed from a luncheon to the state department. Officials sought to establish communication with consular agents near the disaster site. The Lusitania and Fabala disasters were treated as the same category and would be handled similarly regarding American interests.
Four Northwest passengers are listed on the Lusitania after its torpedoing. The names given are J. S. Arter, Mr. and Mrs. Wm Crother of Tacoma, and J. W. Quillian of Spokane.
London dispatch says the U boat that torpedoed the Lusitania is thought to be the same vessel that sank two 5,000 ton freighters Centurion and Candidate yesterday and the Earl of Latham on Wednesday. The admiralty ordered a flotilla of fast destroyers to hunt the undersea craft.
The Cunard line manager says the Lusitania was sunk by a submarine. A wireless from Old Head of Kinsale reported the sinking at 2 33 p m eight miles south by west of Old Head of Kinsale. Antwerp is noted as one of the world’s largest ports in the area.
The Lusitania, famed as the most majestic liner, and its sister Mauretania set sea records with record runs to New York and Queenstown to New York. Each ship boasted 70 000 horsepower, 25 knot speed, nine decks, room for 3000, and luxury suites. Built with royal mail ambitions, they could mount six inch guns if needed.
Syracuse May 7. Attorneys for Col. Roosevelt push their Albany contract graft inquiry as Gilbert C. Bishop, former Albany Journal cashier and missing since 1915, reappears to identify ledger entries. Barnes' lawyers plan to challenge Bishop's testimony.
Neil McKinnon, a county jail inmate on an errand downtown, reappears boarding a train toward Walla Walla with commitment papers stating a six months to 15 years sentence. Sheriff Hodge received a telegram from Warden Henry Drumm confirming the party presented as McKinnon and naming him as defendant.
New York May 7 reports indicate Lusitania sunk by a submarine. Queenstown messages say about 20 boats nearby and around 15 heading to the scene to aid survivors Weather is clear and crews await official updates from Cunard officials in New York Batten. U.S. passengers include Alfred Vanderbilt and others.
