In Ellensburg on May 6 Bilis alias Spunkem, a gambler, shot and killed Jack Standley after Standley entered Oscar Rentasch's saloon. Bilis fired five shots, three to the heart, one to the head, and one to the arm. Bilis claimed Standley had threatened his life and said he acted in self defense. Rumors of lynching were discussed but counsel prevailed.
B D Crocker of Walla Walla Washington arrived in Washington and met with Senator Foster amid efforts to support Foster in Ide case before the commerce committee. Crocker aims to learn charges against Ide for possible response while remaining a contender for collector of customs. The president refused to withdraw Ide’s name and maintained charges lack foundation.
The British ship Bay Rock bound for Liverpool from Fraser River reported in speed condition on April 11 at latitude 1 degree north and longitude 364 west. There were fears for the Red Rock's safety with 20 percent reinsurance.
The body recovered from the bay this morning has been identified as Eden, a former fireman on the steamer Humboldt. Friends last night reported the body had been in the water several days and was cleaned by acquaintances.

The Chamber of Commerce committee on city affairs discussed gambling and police protection in residence districts and passed resolutions opposing the garbage box system. The printing and advertising committee met, and keel laying exercises are scheduled for tomorrow afternoon with preliminary work to begin.
In Los Angeles on May 6 Dr KE W Aldrich formerly of Chicago fought two police detectives who tried to arrest him in his Hotel Savoy apartment. One detective, Charles Hawley, was seriously wounded and possibly fatally, after which Aldrich fatally shot himself. He faced Chicago charges of bigamy and perjury.
The street department will protect city street trees as spring buds. Superintendent Little announced enforcement of the sweeping ordinance banning tree climbing and mutilation with a fine of 100 dollars.
Special to the Star from Victoria B C reports the body of Sergeant Robertson of H M S Phaeton was found in Esquimalt harbor. He had been missing since April 10 when his leave expired and a shortage in his account is suspected. Police consider death by his own hand possible.
Republicans of Ballard will meet at the city hall to organize the fall campaign. The eventis slated for May 5 in Ballard.
A Beattle Ministerial association session at the YMCA chose Rev. A. Edwin Burrows as president replacing Rev. Beers who resigned. Committees were formed to investigate immoral conditions in the city and compare with other towns, with plans to aid religious and philanthropic work including Washington Bible Society. New worker Miss KB Putnam arrived to aid families and sew for the poor. J Gordon MacPherson joined the association and Frank Dickson was named song leader.
New York May 4 reports three brokerages Offenbach and Moore Henry Broa Co and Lockwood Hurd Co tied to the Webb Meyer syndicate announced failures. The exchanges felt a temporary impact with no statements issued as Dr Seward Webb arrived and held executive sessions with associates.

J. A. Parry was struck by a Northern Pacific train near Ross this morning. He was knocked into the government canal with a badly bruised body and a deep forehead cut. The engineer warned with whistles but Parry did not notice before the train could stop. Parry was rescued, treated by Dr. Miller at Fremont, then transported to Beattie, with recovery expected after a few days in hospital.
L. G. Aldrich a waiter at the Bis marck cafe corner Firat avenue and Madison street is under arrest at police headquarters charged with petty larceny. He has admitted stealing a purse containing $10.20 left on a table by a lunch party. City Detective Jack Barck made the arrest.
Gue Bohooh of the Midway saloon was robbed of his watch while alighting a Columbia street car last evening. The culprit is described as one of the numerous street car pickpockets operating in the city.
A railway wreck near Leiperg in Berlin today killed Herr Friendel former National Liberal deputy and two others. Six people were injured as the train derailed with the cause under investigation.

The steamer Manette owned by Capt. McMillan of Tacoma shifts from Tacoma-Seattle-Whatcom to the Seattle Bremerton route after thorough repairs. She is praised for speedy engines and is expected to be a brisk competitor on the new line.
