Inbound from California the freighter Santa Alicia ran aground off Marrowstone Point in the Strait of Juan de Fuca near Port Townsend due to faulty steering gear. The 23 crew and Captain George S. Hammar remained by the ship as tugs Bee and Warp prepared to assist. ore cargo was aboard and salvage is expected to refloat the vessel.
The Santa Alicia grounded and distressed near Port Townsend after passing the Columbia mouth bound northward. It had been among vessels assisting the ill fated Tokuyo Maru, which burned and sank.
Sixty five survivors of the Tokuyo Maru, a Japanese liner, reached Seattle aboard the army transport Buford after a night at sea. Eight men were confirmed dead including H Suzuki and T Ohashi. Rescue credited to Capt L R M Kerr Third Officer Littchen and Fourth Officer Erickson who saved 22 men unable to reach life boats. Fire started Monday morning, reportedly spontaneous.

Thomas J Killman, a White Cross crusade investigator, lies seriously injured at his home after three men lured him in an auto to a secluded spot near Lake Washington. He says the assailants burned his head and body with a torch in what he suspects is revenge linked to his anti narcotics work and efforts to free a white girl from a local dope ring who has since disappeared. He had previously reported another attempt and recalls meeting two men who asked about Joe Hill and Frank Little.
Theodore E. Casper, 27, a mechanic, was arrested in Laurelhurst on perjury and abandonment charges. He allegedly deserted his eight children and wife, married a 20 year old in Saginaw two months ago, and used an assumed name George P White. The bride learned he was already married.
