The State Department reports the Gulfflight torpedoing by a British submarine and the German aerial attack on the Cushing as the gravest wartime incidents since the war began. Officials say Germany will be held to strict accountability for American losses. Ambassador Gerard is to press Germany with protests while Bryan remains noncommittal on actions.
Trinidad May 3 John R. Lawson Colorado labor leader and key figure in the recent coal strikes was found guilty of murder in the first degree. He received life imprisonment at hard labor instead of the death penalty.
Wm Humes 26 nephew of former Seattle mayor was thrown from the tandem seat of a motorcycle and crushed under an automobile at Fourth Ave and Jackson St. The auto driver was H Jackson 2311 E John St and the motorcyclist was guided by Eugene Riney of Everett. The two young men had ridden from Everett to visit here.
The firemen's band plans to travel to the Frisco exposition in September. Mayor Gill proposes consolidating with the police band to form a 70 member mammoth organization for Washington day in early October. The Tilikumes plan 100 uniformed members for the exposition. The Japanese cabinet holds an extra session on the Chinese question.
The editor and business manager push the columnist to write articles promoting advertising. He refuses, arguing for an ethical divorce between news and ads, while the editors insist publishers must sell ads as part of the paper and persuade readers to value advertising. Continued tomorrow.
May 3 Mineola Long Island Mrs Florence C Carman stands trial for her life for the murder of Mrs Louise Bailey shot in Dr Edwin Carmans office at Freeport. The court room is crowded with the case previously ending in a hung jury. The District Attorney hints at new evidence for the retrial.
A German taube flew over Dover today and was driven off by anti aircraft guns. No bombs were dropped and no damage occurred.
Vancouver police debunk rumors of arson as two daytime and nighttime fires struck Granville Bridge yesterday. Fire crews contained both blazes with four engine divisions responding. In other news Baron von Luttiwitz, interned in Vernon, departed by train after a German serenade. Count Alvo von Alvensleben named governor general of the province by exiled circles.
Col. A. J. Blethen is reported very ill after returning Saturday from the East. The item notes his health concerns and status following travel.
State Department advised of torpedoing of the American tank steamer Gulf Light. Consul Stephen in Plymouth confirmed press reports of the attack by a German submarine. The vessel remained afloat and patrol boats towed toward Scilly as efforts continued.
