The U S Supreme Court set aside Senator Truman B Newberrys two year sentence and $10000 fine for illegal spending to defeat Henry Ford in the 1918 Michigan senatorial race The ruling held a section of the federal corrupt practices act unconstitutional freeing Newberry and 17 co defendants and sparing a further review of primary election regulation by Congress The case began with 134 indicted and 17 convicted with deposits and expenditures cited including $178857 20 claimed by the Newberry campaign committee

A somber crowd lined up in County Treasurer William A. Gaines office to pay the $5 poll tax, the first day the levy was due. By Monday morning 22,218 had paid, with 146,000 names certified by Assessor Frank W. Hull to the county treasurer as subject to the tax. After June 1 the sheriff will seize delinquent property to cover the fee.
A news vendor Vv. Gustafson aged 40 saved a drunken man from being struck by a streetcar at First Ave and Yesterday Saturday night. Gustafson dropped his papers, ran into the street, and pulled the man clear just in time.
Paul Era, 32, manager at the New Vendome hotel, 1817 Firat Ave, is held on an open charge for allegedly swindling George Beseloff out of 200 dollars. Police J. Donlan and patrolmen A. Comer and A. Brodnix assisted in taking Era into custody.
City license committee weighed a proposed ordinance Monday to tightly regulate cabarets. The bill would bar persons of dis orderly character from amusement venues and tightens rules, though it has not yet been introduced in the council.
