The Star publishes the first Vera Cruz battle images by staff photographer W. H. Darborough. Arrived this morning, the photos depict street fighting scenes from the city and mark the first images to reach Seattle.
A Washington state editorial denounces lawmakers for 20 cent per mile travel reimbursements, far above actual costs, naming four local representatives who supported the graft. It labels Humphrey Falconer Johnson and La Follette as etal in a broad rebuke of Congressional corruption.
The Hinky Dink charter is filed with City Clerk Harry Carroll after revision by the committee. A special election will be held to decide the plan for a 30 Hinky Dink, city manager, and pink tea mayor system set to take effect next March if approved.
The Star will announce the winners of this week’s wet or dry contest on Monday. The two best letters on either side will receive $5 cash prizes. Submit brief letters to qualify for next week. The top entries will be published.
At the Atlanta annual conclave from May 10 to 16 Dr. Mark A. Matthews will present Seattle as the candidate city for the 1915 Shriner convention. He was chosen as a delegate from Nile Temple.
New York May 2 Crepe decorated pickets stood outside Rockefeller offices at 26 Broadway. John D Rockefeller Jr stayed secluded at Tarrytown. John D Rockefeller Sr skipped golf for a rare day off. Upton Sinclair, freed from jail, rejoined pickets with a mourning band and supported a church delegation questioning Jesus about Rockefeller’s stance on the Colorado mine strike, a moment disrupted by police.
Union stevedores in Vancouver refuse to handle the CPR steamship Eagle on arrival, causing the Mays- volume of cargo to be moved by non union labor. The strike disrupts dock operations as workers stand firm on union principles.
