The Seattle Star reports fierce fighting from the Scarpe to the Oise with British and German forces exchanging heavy blows. Germans claim advances around Bapaume while British aircrews set new records and observers note continued pressure along the Somme front.
The Washington cable from March 25 quotes President Wilson praising Field Marshal Haig and Allied troops. It expresses American confidence of a secure and final victory as the great West front battle rages in France.
Mysterious shells fall on Paris causing little disturbance as Parisian residents stay in bed. French experts note the explosions are weaker than prior aero plane attacks with shallow ground holes four feet wide and up to two feet deep. Kaiser Wilhelm orders flag hoisting rockets and a holiday for all schools in Germany to celebrate Peronne's capture. Berlin dispatches report heavy German losses in taking Bapaume and note the visit of Kaiser and Field Marshal von Hindenburg to Peronne.
Extremely heavy firing was heard along the Kentish coast through the night. Houses were shaken by the concussions as explosions rumbled offshore in the early hours.
Haig reports a pause in the German offensive with attacks concentrated north and south of Bapaume. British figures say a small foothold north of the city was cleared. German crossings near Licourt were repelled while Peronne lies about 12 miles west of the front. French actions include holding heights on the Oise right bank amid attacks.
