Darnall Hart wife of De Hart and mother of John Hart died this morning amid a meningitis outbreak. The outbreak has surged through the city with high fatality and a dozen more victims, as doctors report rapid, severe symptoms and the health board admits helplessness. Her five children survive. funeral arrangements are in Seattle.
Ex-Senator Burton leaves Trenton prison a free man with his wife waiting and a faded rose on his coat. He plans to publish a weekly paper Home Rule to present his side of the fraud order case that led to his six month sentence for accepting a retainer while a senator. Friends aided his release as he faces loss of future public office rights.
Silent sides fail to resolve pay disputes as committees reconvene in joint session. The steamer Northwestern of the Northwestern Steamship Co strikes Pinnacle Rock near Latouche Island about 16 miles southwest of Valdes Alaska. Passengers are transferred to the steamer Portland. crew remains aboard. Capt Truebridge, master, believes a snowstorm caused the grounding. The vessel, 2334 tons, had been operating Nome route in open season and Valdez Seward run in winter.
Secretary Taft will leave Charleston tomorrow aboard the Mayflower to reach Panama by March. He plans a thorough inquiry into conditions there, to resolve differences and prepare for the summer’s work. He will stop in Havana to confer with Magoon.

The finance committee notes the offer is irregular since no check accompanies it and Keene would only act if he could profit by resale. Tilden may amend his bid and bid higher.

Deputy Sam Huth of Maple Valley found William Patterson of the Pacific Coast company unconscious on the Northern Pacific tracks. Patterson, injured and bleeding with a head cut, was taken to Maple Valley for medical care as a Seattle-bound train passed the spot.
The case of Larry Kelly the notorious smuggler moves from Tacoma courts to the local federal court. Kelly was arrested two years ago for opium smuggling and released on 500 bail. While out on bail he was caught introducing opium into Steilacoom and sentenced to two years. his trial for the earlier offense was to begin next Tuesday.
In a ruling the federal court asserted jurisdiction here because the alleged crime was said to have been committed at Whatcom, though the incident occurred near Tacoma. The decision hinges on where the offense is alleged to have taken place.
Want Trainmen Seattle will probably have the annual convention of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen for 1909. The Chamber of Commerce extends an invitation to this year's convention meeting May 18 in Atlanta. A Seattle committee led by F. W. Phelps plans for 1600 delegates and a 20 day session.
Fred Dennett promoted to assistant commissioner in Washington. Pat Sullivan acquitted in Judge Gordon's court on Sunday closing law after a flimsy prosecution and a single witness, aided by Hi Gill’s defense and jury unanimity. Jury members included J B Wood and A L Piper.
