News reports from London and Tokyo in late March describe heavy firing near Port Arthur and a claimed fortress takeover. Unconfirmed claims cite a combined land and sea assault renewing over the weekend with officials unable to verify the fortress being taken.
German rancher Adolph Schlemerer reported his savings of $660 stolen by an old friend, Carl Schmidt, after meeting in a steamship ticket office. The pair shared lodging until Schmidt fled with the money and Schlemerer’s hat, leaving him shaken and vowing to return to Hood’s Canal as detectives search.

She was buried at sea after illness prevented removal to a hospital. her husband, with a country position near Vladivostok, sent her home to relatives fearing wartime danger. She boarded at Kobe and received nursing care from the ship’s stewardess.
Prof H B Richa of Chicago spoke on the wonders of oxygen before the M C A at Christensen's hall last night. It was the fourth educational address in the association series and he illustrated the talk with experiments.
After a week at sea Mrs. Smith died March 11 aboard the vessel. At one o clock the body was laid to rest in the deep sea. Passengers mourned, many having known her in the first saloon during her brief voyage. The ship's surgeon diagnosed the death as pneumonia.
