Port Arthur dispatches report a sharp clash between Russian Cossacks and Japanese cavalry on the Yalu River where Japanese horses were killed and the riders forced to flee on foot. A second skirmish at Anju on the Korean border also repulsed the Japanese.
March 18 report from Harbin suggests the Vladivostok squadron may still be in Vladivostok inner harbor. Observers believe Captain Keltsgenstein avoided a dash for open sea as Japanese patrols searched the coast. No Russian ships have been sighted by Japan, implying concealment behind Observation hill.
A Japanese steamer with 10 wounded and nine bodies arrived at Sasebo after a battle off Port Arthur between Japanese torpedo boat destroyers and Russian forces.
