Captain Charles Hopkins died yesterday at his home at the corner of Ferry avenue and Columbia street. He was eighty, a Northwest pioneer who came around the Horn in 1849, survived a San Francisco fire, settled in Milwaukee Oregon, and engaged in lumber and mercantile business. He married Lucy Baker, daughter of Senator B D Baker, served as captain and quartermaster at Vancouver during the Civil War, later ran hardware in Portland, and died steadfast in his faith.

Overcome by heat claims life of George Wilcox
George Wilcox a night fireman in Building B died last night about 10 o clock after being overcome by heat while cleaning machinery above the boilers. He was found unconscious near active equipment and transported to the Stevens hotel where Dr. F M Carroll treated him. The physician said Wilcox may recover in a few days unless complications arise.
