Wiju Burned as Russians Retreat Ahead of Japanese

Seoul reports that Russian forces set fire to Wiju on the Korean bank of the Yalu and destroyed the town as they retreat across the river. A total Russian evacuation of surrounding territory follows the rapid Japanese advance northward.

Admiral Makaroff describes torpedo boat actions on March 10 12 and 12 with the destroyer Viastini sinking an enemy boat and Sterepuschtchi disabled. Novik and Boyarin attempted rescue as five enemy cruisers and battleships closed in. the Viastini and Sterepuschtchi crew suffer casualties and one vessel sinks. Japanese bombardment lasts from dawn to 1 pm with 154 12 inch shells fired. one Russian officer and four sailors wounded, one soldier killed. The Japanese Takasago is reported damaged and a Japanese ironclad may be crippled while Russian batteries keep firing.

Arthur, Central News, reports the Japanese squadron disappeared after the tenth battle and had not returned by yesterday morning. The Russian squadron moved to sea and came back in the afternoon with no sight of the enemy. A shell wounded Colonel Baron Frank's wife and decapitated his daughter near his house during Thursday's bombardment.
