Rumor from St. Petersburg suggests the Russian Emperor may convene a special council to discuss peace terms as Field Marshal Kuropatkin acknowledges a decisive defeat. The report contrasts the possible peace move with continued military setbacks and political maneuvering in the capital.
Reports from St. Petersburg and Tokio claim Kuropatkin’s retreat ongoing with heavy Russian losses and European powers pushing negotiations for peace. Japanese victory at Mukden prompts calls to end the war as fate of Manchurian forces hangs on battlefield moves and political signals.
Dewitt Skutt leads the Beattie Electric company popular employee contest for watches at G Beninghausen jeweler First Avenue. J McLean trails by ten votes. Roland Cotterill in third. First prize is a $45 hunting case watch. second $50 railroad service special. third a $15 gold filled watch. Voting is via coupons in The Star and votes over a week old will not be counted.
The dispatch notes General Kuropatkin’s army retreating north of Mukden with two corps west of the city in an isolated, undersupplied position. They are unlikely to break the Japanese cordon and will probably join the prisoners taken when Mukden fell. Minister Teraoutchi congratulates General Oyama while Oyama credits his officers and men for the victory.
General Oyama reports heavy fighting along the Hun river and near Mukden as Japanese forces tighten a cordon and push northward from Fu Ho toward Bantu. Prizes expected around 60,000 as Kuropatkin reinforces his right while attempting to hold the Hun river line.
Pedestrians near Baker and Richards storage plant on Grant Street Bridge spotted burglars tossing loot from the warehouse windows shortly after 9 p.m. Police, including Cit Detective Hu and Acting Jailor Devel, arrived quickly but the robbers had already fled. Entrance was gained by breaking a window. In a separate note, the funeral for R. McDonald of 411 Jefferson Street is set for 10 a.m. tomorrow at Bonney-Watson parlors.
Judge Griffin sentences 15 year old Johnnie Bush to 10 years in the state penitentiary for attempted robbery and murder threats. Bush, brought to the bench with a hopeful look, collapses in tears as the sentence is read. Prosecutor Mackintosh calls for tough action to deter youthful crime.
Tonight and Sunday bring occasional rain with a chance of showers. A 2:30 pm temperature update is promised. Weather note urges preparation for a light shower and caps and bonnets for ladies. A fishing trip and party plans may be affected by Sunday weather.
A young German mother seeks return of her baby, signed away under pressure at a children's home. Judge Gilliam will hear arguments next Friday on who is best entitled to custody as the case unfolds amid claims of coercion and inadequate language understanding.
Charles Corun 66 a longtime Seattle resident and proprietor of the Fifth Avenue hotel shot himself in a room of the Fifth Avenue hotel at Yesler Way. He acted alone after being seen about the place earlier and his death is believed due to long standing depression. His wife Mrs Corun found him around 12 30 pm with a revolver nearby.
Attorney Dawley began the opening for Mrs Chadwick amid emotion as her son watched. Judge Taylor delivered the charge to the jury at 2 45. Dawley finished at 11 25 then District Attorney Sullivan spoke for the state. Mrs Chadwick cried during Dawley’s peroration and the jury retired at 3 30.
Cassini reports the Russian ambassador states reverses will not hasten peace. He notes after Liao Yang talk of peace, Russia sent reinforcements. Mukden again shows retreats and more reinforcements, with no word of peace.
Rosina Grover answers interrogatories in a breach of promise suit against Mayor Zook of Ballard. The defendant allegedly knew she had consumption before engagement and lent her tuberculosis books. he supposedly offered no prior excuse. Senator Van de Vanter remains in precarious condition. Dr Carro notes no improvement and high fevers. A bomb killed McCullock at the Brosto hotel in St. Petersburg, with four injured as authorities suspect revolutionist intent. B W Sherwood named receiver for the Everett Evening Record by Judge Frater. Habrose Peters creditor requested appointment. The paper will run until new arrangements are made.
