News reports German and American sailors fighting outside the American embassy in Constantinople. The cable describes repeated street brawls, prompting calls for a prosecutor to clean up the scene and restore order amid tense international frictions.
President Wilson announces an eight thousand strong American expedition with 2000 cavalry to pursue and capture Villa and halt his banditry in Mexico. Gen. Scott leads the war effort as Cabinet members debate war aims while Congress weighs declarations and troop scales.
Police records show January had 26 drunkenness arrests, averaging less than one per day. February surged to 106 arrests, about four daily. By the first nine days of March, 51 arrests occurred, averaging nearly six per day, signaling a continuing rise.
Mayor writes to G D Conger of the Anti-Saloon League proposing that an energetic young lawyer be chosen to prosecute violators. He says the city council will fund the effort and that Prosecutor Lundin and the mayor endorse the plan. Ft Bliss soldiers arrive in Victoria New Mexico to guard residents after Villista activity near the border. First battalion 20th Infantry detains at 7 15 am while 11th Infantry reaches Hachita. Troop A sent south to monitor bands as signals flare and settlers brace for potential attack.
El Paso March 10. Villistas raided an American ranch west of Columbus early today and killed the owner named Hopps. Report comes from J B Mair a Columbus merchant in New Mexico.
John F. Gillies former claim agent of the industrial insurance commission was convicted of forgery and sentenced by Judge Mitchell to four and a half years of hard labor in the state penitentiary Court costs amounting to two thousand dollars were charged and must be paid or served as additional hard labor extending the sentence by about two years
Reports say raids by Villistas across the New Mexico border continue with 4000 armed fighters near the line. American troops fortify Douglas while residents flee to Columbus and Deming awaiting further attacks.
